Rivian’s FleetOS is a comprehensive fleet management platform designed to help operators efficiently manage electric vehicle fleets. As the design lead, I spearheaded the development of a unified design system to bring consistency and clarity to the map and vehicle visualization features. This effort was critical in ensuring a seamless user experience across key components of the platform, including the Fleet Portal Hub, Vehicle Tracker, Trip History, and Vehicle Profile.
Challenge
With multiple features that handle vehicle tracking, trip management, and fleet status, the platform lacked visual consistency across its various modules. Users found it challenging to interpret vehicle statuses and activities at a glance, slowing down decision-making and reducing efficiency. The challenge was to develop a cohesive design system that harmonized the map and vehicle visualizations, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and ease of use for both desktop and mobile users.
Process
The project began with extensive research into how users interacted with FleetOS. I conducted user interviews and reviewed analytics to identify pain points and areas for improvement in the existing visualization system. Based on these insights, I collaborated with cross-functional teams to define the key visual elements and components for the design system.
I led the design process, starting with wireframes and iterating through several rounds of feedback from stakeholders and users. We focused on streamlining the visual language to ensure that vehicle statuses, map markers, and trip data were easily distinguishable and intuitive. This iterative process involved multiple prototype tests to refine the user interface for maximum clarity and usability.
Outcome
The result was a comprehensive design system that brought uniformity and cohesion to Rivian’s FleetOS. The new map and vehicle visualization features significantly improved the user experience, allowing fleet operators to quickly and effortlessly understand vehicle locations, statuses, and trip histories. The system improved decision-making speed, enhanced data clarity, and provided a more intuitive interface for fleet managers, ultimately driving increased efficiency across the platform.
